Tournament Ready: How to Prep Before, During, and After for Your Best Pickleball Experience
Want to feel more confident walking into your next pickleball tournament? This guide covers how to prep before, during, and after game day—so you stay focused, energized, and ready to compete at your best. Whether you're playing for fun or going for gold, this is your tournament-day game plan.
Before the Tournament: Set Yourself Up for Success
1. Train Like You Compete
In the weeks leading up to a tournament, shift your focus to competitive play. Drilling is great, but now’s the time to simulate real matches. Practice serve and return consistency, third shot drops and drives, and transition zone movement. If you’re playing doubles, work with your partner on communication and positioning.
2. Check Your Gear
Don’t let small gear issues become big distractions. Make sure your paddle is in good shape, your shoes are comfortable and supportive, and you've got the essentials: extra grips, socks, hair ties, snacks, sunscreen, and a water bottle. Pro tip: test everything before tournament day—not during your first match.
3. Plan Ahead
Double-check the location, your start time, and the expected flow of the day. Pack layers for changing weather (or in Redding’s case, a fresh change of clothes), a chair or towel for downtime, and familiar food. This is not the time to try something new. Stick to what your body knows. (We usually get sushi the night before.) Start hydrating at least 48 hours before game day—especially in Redding heat. But keep in mind: high elevation, humidity, wind, and nerves can all take a toll on your body. If you're traveling, arrive early enough to stretch out and rest.
4. Prep Your Mindset
Even if you're physically prepared, your mindset can make or break your experience. Set small goals: stay positive, keep your body language strong, and focus on one point at a time. Visualization and breathing techniques go a long way in calming nerves and keeping your energy locked in.
During the Tournament: Compete Smart
1. Be a Good Partner—Before the First Ball
Coordinate your arrival time with your partner and give yourself plenty of buffer for check-in, water refills, bathroom breaks, and warming up. If you say you’ll be there at 11:15 AM—be there at 11:15 AM. Starting off late can affect your partner's warm-up and the vibe for the day.
And whether you’re playing with your spouse or a blind date, tournament day is not the time to talk about outside drama. Be fully present. Everything else can wait. Be the best partner you can be—and then let go of what you can’t control.
Before the first point, my partner and I always tell each other we love each other 🥰. Pick your own mantra or phrase to say: “We’ve got this,” “I’m with you,” or “Let’s go have fun.” A little connection goes a long way.
2. Warm Up—Don’t Just Hit Balls
Start with dynamic movement: stretch, jog, jump rope—get your heart rate up. I like to jump rope for 5 minutes before touching a ball. Then we use a 3-minute timer and rotate through each shot intentionally:
Volleys (always first!)
Dinks
Cross-court dinks
3rd shot drops and drives
Serves
Returns
Overheads (don’t skip these!)
This whole process takes about 30 minutes. Once we’re loose, we’ll often ask someone nearby to play doubles or skinny singles to get in a few no-pressure points. This helps shake off nerves and get in “game mode.”
3. Fuel and Hydrate Throughout the Day
Tournaments are long. Keep your energy up with easy-to-digest carbs, salty snacks, fruit, and protein bars. Hydrate early and often—especially in the heat—and bring electrolytes to help prevent fatigue or cramping.
4. Stay in Your Bubble
Between matches, protect your focus. I personally avoid my phone altogether—no emails, no social media, no news. If I need to reset after a tough loss, I’ll put in headphones and listen to music, but I always check back in with my partner before the next match. Don’t isolate yourself.
Take time to discuss what went well and any adjustments for the next game—maybe you switch sides or decide who serves first. If you're winning, change nothing.
5. One Point at a Time
Whether you’re up or down, keep returning to the present. Encourage your partner—no matter what. Tap paddles whether they hit a winner or dump an overhead into the net. You're a partner, not a coach.
Avoid giving criticism. If you do have a suggestion, frame it as a question and use “we.”
Try:
“What do you think we should try?”
“I think we should try slowing down the point—they might prefer fast hands.”
“It seems like he's making more mistakes—should we test him a bit more?”
This keeps the vibe collaborative and supportive.
After the Tournament: Recover and Reflect
1. Cool Down and Rehydrate
Treat your body kindly—especially after a full day of play. Stretch, rehydrate, and eat a solid meal. I’m a big fan of a post-tournament ice bath (brutal, but effective).
2. Take Notes
I like to film our matches and review them afterward. If it’s been a rough day, I do it with a drink in hand 😉. Ask yourself:
Did my serve hold up?
Were my returns deep?
Did I stay positive?
Was I a good partner?
Do we work well together? (Trickier if you're married 😅)
These reflections turn every tournament into a learning opportunity.
3. Celebrate
You showed up, competed, and put yourself out there—and that deserves to be celebrated. Whether you won hardware or just grew as a player, you earned it. We usually treat ourselves to a nice dinner. After a long day of playing, I’m definitely not cooking—and good food is a perfect way to cap it all off.
Final Thoughts
Being tournament ready isn’t just about skills—it’s about mindset, preparation, and being kind to yourself along the way. Whether you walk away with a medal or a list of goals, you’ve already won by stepping on that court.

Tournaments have an energy you just can’t recreate during open play. Music, laughter, friendly competition, new faces — it’s like a pickleball party with a purpose. Every time I play in a tournament I use a new technique or strategy that I learned that helps me stay focused, calm, or reset. My newest tip is my serve routine and breathing pattern.

Worried because you don’t have a partner lined up, or think you’ll feel like the odd one out? You’re not alone — and you don’t have to be. Most tournaments will help you find a partner if you sign up solo, and players are usually welcoming and excited to meet new faces. It’s one of the easiest ways to instantly expand your pickleball circle! I played with a “blind date” (someone you’ve never met) and we ended up winning Silver together. Regardless of winning we loved playing together and have played together since. You never know what new amazing friendships you’ll create.
4. It’s a Safe Space to Grow
Despite what you might think, pickleball tournaments are way more welcoming than intimidating. Most players are supportive and encouraging, especially at local events. Everyone remembers their first tournament nerves — and they’ll be cheering you on just for showing up. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being brave enough to try.
When we first started playing pickleball at Enterprise Park, the vibrant community around us encouraged to sign up for the local Chico tournament. Armed with inexpensive paddles from Amazon and just a couple of months of practice, we hesitated but ultimately took the plunge. The advice from fellow players was clear: register in the 3.5 skill division and work your way up from there. Our experience turned out to be a fantastic one; we secured victory in our first tournament through some thrilling and closely contested matches. The journey has been rewarding, and it all started with the courage to try.
5. You Get Better... Fast
Tournament play speeds up your improvement like nothing else. You’ll see different playing styles, strategies, and levels of intensity. After just one tournament, you’ll walk away with a clearer idea of what skills to work on — and you’ll notice your regular game level up, too. After we play in tournaments we always leave with a couple skills we’d like to drill when we get home.
6. You Might Surprise Yourself
That shot you’ve been practicing? That serve you weren’t sure you’d ever land? Under pressure, you might just pull it off. Tournaments bring out the competitor inside you in the best way. And even if you don’t win, you’ll win experience — which is priceless. I made my first singles baseline ATP (around the post) during my first match in my first singles tournament. I couldn’t believe it. I haven’t done it again, but it gave me new confidence throughout the tournament.
A Personal Story:
When I played in my very first tennis tournament, I was 9 years old.
I didn’t win a single game — not even one.
But I walked off the court all smiles, telling my parents, “I loved it!”
It wasn’t about winning. It was about being part of something exciting, challenging myself, and discovering a new kind of joy.
And that feeling? It’s still the same today every time I step onto the court for something new.

You don’t have to be a pro. You don’t have to be a master strategist.
You just have to be someone willing to show up, play hard, and have some fun along the way.

Favorite Paddle

Favorite Shoes
Asics Gel Resolution 8 or 9 (whichever is cheaper)– I started off with Adidas Barricades as a junior player and they were so heavy & stiff that I would pay my sister to break them in for me. I love the Asics running shoes so when I got their tennis shoes it was a perfect fit. Comfort, grip, and durability. I wear these all day teaching and still want to play after! I usually can find a good deal on amazon. Babolat Jet Tere All Court are just as comfy, but a little too wide for me. Find a good shoes that doesn’t give you blisters and has good stopping power. Just please everyone stop wearing Hokas to play.
Favorite Club Shirt
Redding Open Sweater - We made shirts for our first tournament. I like paying homage to tennis grand slams with some of our logos. My dad and my sis made our last tournament shirts (we like to keep it in house when we can) and ended up accidentally getting the logo sent in the wrong size for free! I used the bigger logo and put it on a black sweatshirt. I then made one for Damon. We never advertised them, but have made them all from personal requests. All to say, right now I’m loving our Redding Open Sweater — soft, comfy, and my go-to all winter. Here is a picture of a funny coincidence where we are all wearing different shirts. Go-To Playlist
I’m all about upbeat energy when I’m coaching. I used to be a DJ and Damon used to be in a band! The picture is from “Rock n Roll” theme at our kids summer camp in SF. So we like to pick music based on the demographic or party theme, but something we also enjoy. Sorry, no Taylor Swift. If you’ve been to the night league we play a lot of classic rock cause everyone knows the songs and nothing too crazy will come on. I haven’t decided on the music for my party this Friday, but I’m leaning towards women who rock. Now what I listen to when I workout isn’t anything I’d want my mother to hear, but then again every generation thinks that about the next generation. Now when I’m playing or getting ready for my next match in a tournament I listen to something with a little attitude — This is my current battle song Weatherman, by Dead Sara. I’d have my mom listen to it so don’t be too worried to check it out. I think music is a great tool. I pick songs that get me into the right headspace and the same goes for our events. Favorite Strategy Tip
“Have Fun”
No joke. Why are you playing if you are not having fun? Even the pros love it. They are happy to being out there. If you stay positive you’ll not only enjoy the sport more you’re also more likely to win. Even if you lose, be someone that people like play with regardless. Remember the word, “play”. You’re “playing a game”, keep it that way and you’ll get to live an active & social life for as long as your body will tolerate it. Luckily, with pickleball that can be a long time. Ok, you want more than that? “Breath. Move your feet. Watch the ball.” Those 3 things are the first go to when I’m not playing my best or if I’m nervous. Want more goodies? Favorite Event
Hard to choose, but the Play for Pups Scramble is a new event that we wanted to do in memory of our beloved Viva that recently passed. I had her for 13 years and it was a tough loss for us. We got her and many of our pets from the Haven Humane, so we wanted to raise money for rescue pets — They will even be bringing dogs on site. We hope that it is successful so that we can make it an annual event. Event if you are unable to attend we’d love to have you drop by to say hi and pet some lovely doggies. We will also have a drop box the next 2 weeks for any donations.

Recovery Must-Have
All of it - Recovery is my least favorite part of being an athlete. It was all “No pain, no gain” and “You can rest when you’re dead”. Now I swear by it. I no longer wait until that nagging pain starts to get worse, I just have a weekly session when my sports rehab at Phase 5 to stay on top of it. It’s still “No pain, no gain” cause scrapping, cupping, and my least favorite, the cold plunge, is no fun. My mom is better at the plunge than I am. My best is 4 minutes, but I hate it. I’m made for the heat, not ice baths. I also recommend stretching and a day off. I used to get after it every day, but my body performs better if it’s had a least one rest day. Want the cheap version? Buy a foam roller and go jump in the river (stay close to the shore). You only get one body, take care of it.
Court Fuel
Ok. I get asked what I eat and it’s changed a lot over the years. I don’t believe in diets, but finding what works best for your body. I grew up in the carbo load fad and I later realized that it didn’t work for me. Here are some things that have worked for me and I actually enjoy eating. My spinach smoothie days are over.
I don’t eat much in the morning or before I train. I recently read that intermittent fasting isn’t as helpful for women as it is for men due to our higher level of cortisol. So I will drink my celery juice and some nuts.
I will add a scoop of creatine (I like Jocko Wilinks) and electrolytes (Local Louis Volpe is my favorite) in my water before I get started. Not only does creatine support muscle strength and recovery it also supports brain cellular function, memory retention, and vitality. Just remember to drink a lot of water when you take it.
After training we eat eggs and oatmeal. Sometimes we add bacon! But this is if we have a long break before being back on the court.
Before heading back to work we either have yogurt with protein powder or a protein shake (I like Optimum Nutrition and Diesel) I get vanilla so I can add it to yogurts or oatmeal.
I’ve eaten so many food bars in my life that I now have a hard time getting them down. I’ve had close to 1000 of the Think! Protein bars, which I chose cause of low sugar and gluten free. They taste as good as a protein bar can. I avoid food bars unless I’m playing in a tournament and need some quick fuel.
Dinner is the one meal that isn’t the same every day and isn’t focused just on fuel. I do most of the cooking and most everything has one veggie, carb, or protein. I cook mostly gluten-free and avoid gluten when I’m at a tournament. I just feel like it weighs me down.
Non-guilty pleasures. Peanut butter on rice cake. I make my own peanut butter and I could eat it every day. Boom Chica Pop Popcorn. This is prob the one food I have to put in a bowl or I’ll eat the whole bag. It goes from non-guilty to guilty really quickly. Moderation is key. Chai tea. I buy mine from Samovar in San Francisco. It’s a loose leaf tea and I add cream and honey (I also have a large collection of honeys from everywhere we travel). Drink that with your peanut butter rice cake during your reading time. Perfection.
Favorite guilty pleasures? Pizza. I make it once a week. I’m also a sucker for a beefy burger and fries. Damon makes the best burgers. Also, I love fancy cocktails. Most of my sugar is consumed in alcohol. Don’t judge. I already said “guilty” pleasure. Lastly, chocolate. I always have a stash of See’s Scotchmallows. I don’t need to hide them cause I have a very high delayed gratification tolerance. If you like ooey gooey chocolate go score a sample at See’s.
Work Partner
My favorite part of pickleball is that I get to spend all my time with Damon. I feel so blessed that we get to coach, play, and figure it out together! We couldn’t do this without our amazing community! So thank you for making pickleball our new favorite sport and we hope that we can make it your favorite too!

Pickleball in Paradise: Our Costa Rica Pickleball Retreat Recap
We are thrilled to announce that we’ve secured the same resort for next year’s retreat! As we reminisce about the incredible time we had, we can’t help but get excited for what’s to come. This January, we kicked off the new year with an unforgettable pickleball retreat in Costa Rica. Set against the backdrop of lush jungles, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, this week-long retreat combined the perfect mix of pickleball, adventure, and relaxation. For those who couldn’t join us, here’s a look at what made this experience so special—and why you’ll want to join us next time!
New Adventure Awaits:
The excitement was palpable as we boarded the plane in San Francisco, surrounded by familiar, smiling faces ready for an adventure! The thrill of traveling to a foreign country added a layer of excitement that made everything feel a bit surreal. Upon landing in Costa Rica, our van awaited us, the promise of new experiences ahead. We quickly settled into our cozy rooms, but the best part? The aroma of a delicious traditional meal being prepared by the resort staff! It was the ideal way to kick off our trip, a perfect blend of comfort and adventure.
Pickleball Training:
Every morning, the resort served breakfast before we went to the court. Guests got to choose their own breakfast from a variety of options that they made onsite. After fueling up, the excitement was palpable as we gathered for our first session. We loved having the opportunity to really focus on specific shots and strategies. Each morning we played for 3-4 hours so we got to hone each skill into a little more muscle memory. One day we went for 5 hours! So proud of everyone for all their hard work. Since the hotel was also a club we got to play with the locals a couple nights a week in the club’s open play. It was great to watch everyone implement the skills and strategies that we had worked on previously. By the last day not only was everyone family, but we got to see major improvements in everyone’s game.
Non-Pickleball Time:
Beyond the courts, Costa Rica’s natural beauty and adventurous spirit took center stage. After our morning session everyone parted ways to either rest, explore, or shop. We would either relax on the beach, pool, or walk through the town. No matter what participants chose, every activity captured the essence of “Pura Vida,” Costa Rica’s philosophy of living life to the fullest.
Our favorite experience was the sunset cruise. We went out on a catamaran to a small island and from there we snorkeled, paddle boarded, and fished. I (Amy) got to reel in a big tuna that we ended up eating for dinner that night. Coming back to the shore at sunset made it the perfect day. We will make sure that we include that experience on the next trip.
Delicious Local Flavor:
Costa Rica has so many great international restaurants to choose from. We recommended a sushi spot we went to the previous year for the first night of our trip and everyone wanted to join us. After all the fun we had that night the rest of the trip we all decided to dine together. We thought they might get tired of us, but sharing a meal each night really connected us all. Our group dinners brought everyone together to share stories from the day, strengthening bonds and building a sense of community.
Memories to Last a Lifetime
The retreat wasn’t just about pickleball or exploring Costa Rica—it was about connection. Watching participants cheer each other on, share a laugh over a misstep, and celebrate victories (big or small) was the highlight of the trip.

The Journey to Creating Our Costa Rica Pickleball Retreat
The Journey to Making It Happen
A year ago, we found ourselves in Costa Rica, not as retreat hosts, but as explorers on a mission. Our passion for pickleball and our love for travel had us wondering—what if we could combine the two into an unforgettable experience? We had seen other sports retreats thrive, and we knew the growing pickleball community was eager for something beyond the usual tournament scene. Inspired by this idea, we set off to find the perfect place to make it happen. We traveled there to scout locations, tour resorts, and envision what an international pickleball retreat could look like. We knew we wanted something special—a place that blended great pickleball facilities with incredible amenities, local charm, and adventure.
We started off in San Jose, the biggest city in Costa Rica, and went north to Tilajari Resort, where Engage hosts their retreats. Initially, we thought this was the perfect fit—great courts and an all-inclusive experience. However, we realized that guests would need a car or a guided tour to explore beyond the resort, which wasn’t ideal.
So, we continued west. Since the West Coast is the best coast back home, we wondered if the same would hold true for Costa Rica. We were right. Our first stop was The Club at Coco Bay, where we were introduced to Fernanda and Jeff, a couple managing the pickleball program there. We instantly connected, sharing our experiences of running a club as a couple. After a fun dinner and some fantastic matches the next morning—including an epic battle of the sexes game—we knew we had found something special. Also, Fernanda is on the Costa Rican national team. Next, we visited Margaritaville. While the facilities were nice, it felt a bit too much like a typical resort for what we envisioned. The drinks and views were great, though!
Our next stop was Tamarindo, which perfectly embodied the "Pura Vida" lifestyle—relaxed, welcoming, and full of charm. We fell in love with the 15-Love Hotel. Nestled among lush trees filled with monkeys and giant lizards, it was just a 10-minute walk from the beach. No car was needed—everything was within walking distance, making it an ideal retreat location.
Before finalizing our choice, we checked out one last option: Hacienda Pinilla, where an American named Mani had set up courts and offered accommodations in two separate four-bedroom houses Pura Vida Houses . While it was a great setup for large groups, sharing a house with strangers wouldn’t work for everyone.
In the end, 15-Love checked all the boxes: beautiful courts, a prime location, and an atmosphere that encouraged both relaxation and excitement.
Once we returned home, where it was cold and rainy, we reached out to 15-Love to confirm a week’s availability. Now, the big question was—could we get enough people to sign up?Would we be able to create an experience that lived up to our vision?
The answer soon became clear—YES. The response was incredible, and before we knew it, we had a full group ready to embark on this adventure with us.

2. Declutter and Reset
Organize your gear (pickleball paddle, shoes, etc.) and clear out any clutter at home to start the year fresh. Give us your gently used tennis/pickleball shoes, paddles, or rackets for our local youth. Just drop them off in the tub by the Riverview Pickleball Courts.
3. Try a New Activity
Experiment with a fun cross-training workout like yoga, cycling, snowboarding, or dancing! We will be up on the mountain this winter and hope to see you there!
4. Solo Pickleball Practice
Find a wall or rebounder and work on your volleys and dinks. Earn that shirt by being the fastest hands in town by taking on that wall!
5. Reconnect with friends
Reach out to someone you’ve lost touch with and invite them to play pickleball or grab coffee. Here I am with my childhood friend Molly in her first tournament. Now we are playing in Arizona together! This sport has rekindled our friendship and somehow she got me to wear a tennis dress for the first time since college.
