Pura Vida Pickleball

Pickleball in Paradise: Our Costa Rica Pickleball Retreat Recap

We are thrilled to announce that we’ve secured the same resort for next year’s retreat! As we reminisce about the incredible time we had, we can’t help but get excited for what’s to come. This January, we kicked off the new year with an unforgettable pickleball retreat in Costa Rica. Set against the backdrop of lush jungles, pristine beaches, and vibrant culture, this week-long retreat combined the perfect mix of pickleball, adventure, and relaxation. For those who couldn’t join us, here’s a look at what made this experience so special—and why you’ll want to join us next time!

New Adventure Awaits:

The excitement was palpable as we boarded the plane in San Francisco, surrounded by familiar, smiling faces ready for an adventure! The thrill of traveling to a foreign country added a layer of excitement that made everything feel a bit surreal. Upon landing in Costa Rica, our van awaited us, the promise of new experiences ahead. We quickly settled into our cozy rooms, but the best part? The aroma of a delicious traditional meal being prepared by the resort staff! It was the ideal way to kick off our trip, a perfect blend of comfort and adventure.

Pickleball Training:

Every morning, the resort served breakfast before we went to the court. Guests got to choose their own breakfast from a variety of options that they made onsite. After fueling up, the excitement was palpable as we gathered for our first session. We loved having the opportunity to really focus on specific shots and strategies. Each morning we played for 3-4 hours so we got to hone each skill into a little more muscle memory. One day we went for 5 hours! So proud of everyone for all their hard work. Since the hotel was also a club we got to play with the locals a couple nights a week in the club’s open play. It was great to watch everyone implement the skills and strategies that we had worked on previously. By the last day not only was everyone family, but we got to see major improvements in everyone’s game.

Non-Pickleball Time:

Beyond the courts, Costa Rica’s natural beauty and adventurous spirit took center stage. After our morning session everyone parted ways to either rest, explore, or shop. We would either relax on the beach, pool, or walk through the town. No matter what participants chose, every activity captured the essence of “Pura Vida,” Costa Rica’s philosophy of living life to the fullest.

Our favorite experience was the sunset cruise. We went out on a catamaran to a small island and from there we snorkeled, paddle boarded, and fished. I (Amy) got to reel in a big tuna that we ended up eating for dinner that night. Coming back to the shore at sunset made it the perfect day. We will make sure that we include that experience on the next trip.

Delicious Local Flavor:

Costa Rica has so many great international restaurants to choose from. We recommended a sushi spot we went to the previous year for the first night of our trip and everyone wanted to join us. After all the fun we had that night the rest of the trip we all decided to dine together. We thought they might get tired of us, but sharing a meal each night really connected us all. Our group dinners brought everyone together to share stories from the day, strengthening bonds and building a sense of community.

Memories to Last a Lifetime

The retreat wasn’t just about pickleball or exploring Costa Rica—it was about connection. Watching participants cheer each other on, share a laugh over a misstep, and celebrate victories (big or small) was the highlight of the trip.

Here’s what some of our attendees had to say:

”My favorite part will be when I get home and seeing everyone again. Having that memory we shared together.”

“I had the best time. When and where is the next one?”
